My most popular class is a beginners class, which ticks over but then there's a wealth of other sewing related projects out there for folks to learn and experiment with. I'm not afraid to admit that my class take up has been erratic with some classes getting filled easily and others-which I thought would be really interesting, I have to cancel due to low numbers. It's a total mystery. This time around I've tried a double pronged attack with my usual flyers in the usual places like vintage places and sewing shops (see previous post) Plus an advert in a local magazine for 2 months and I've put Paypal buttons on my website- this has definitely helped me because It's so much easier to collect money although I haven't seen a significant rise in numbers.
This time around, and for a change I'm planning to get a friend to teach one of the workshops. It's a This 'n' That Patchwork and Screen printed bag. Its a great size for a sewing/knitting bag and as the name suggests is made from delightful screenprinted (on a small scale) patches.

Next up is a Creatures workshop. I enjoy making characters when I've reached an impasse with my sewing. It's good to have a total Switch with the way you'd normally work and so when I've had a glut of clothes making I'll stop and create a creature. So we witness the birth of Raydene Flanagan and Peregrine Malcolm, don't ask me what they are because I don't rightly know. A day of Invention and creation which I'm sure will be great fun and full of suprises.

Finally, an appliqued design onto an A Line skirt. So basically It's an A- line skirt class plus your own appliqued design. The clothes I make are covered (some of them)in applique and It's so quick and versatile to do but looks so effective and skillful too, especially when combined with hand-stitches and a few beads. It'll be a chance to design and develop your own applique, which is going to look so original and interesting. As everyone who reads my blog knows-anything you make has got to beat shop brought clothing hands down. Here in sunny Nupton we are fortunate enough to have a great sewing shop run by husband and wife Andy and Gill. The shop has been on the Wellingborough Road for a number of years and they're always cheery and happy to see customers. They mainly stock Janome machines but also sell overlockers and a selection of reconditioned machines too. I always tell my learners to visit for advice and to by their machines. people sometimes seem really chuffed to bag a bargain machine from Aldi or Tesco but in truth they're going to be crap and the man from Tesco isn't going to be able to advise you when the machine goes wrong, or you need new parts. Don't go there.

They've also very kindly let me make a dress for their window which I installed last month. It's a hand painted silk organza with a very delicate 1950's seersucker bodice. This pattern was based on a wedding dress I made last year, which had only one rose on it. Im my shop version the roses are various colours and have sequins surrounding them.

Every minute spent painting this dress was a pleasure and I wish I could get more commissions to do hand painted garments (any brave brides out there????) Although having said that, this week I'm painting a bra for Ariel the little mermaid!

Back to the shop.....they also sell parts for machines and have a good range of thread colours,zips and other shizzle. They'll help you with sewing related queries and conundrums. Plus, they've got a very cute dog called Teddy.

Well, I spent a major part of last week getting work ready for The Selvedge Fashion Fair in Bath. Which was yesterday and was a fair old drive I must say. I also forgot to put extra money in the parking machine and racked up a massive £25 in car park fees. The weather was a bit of a bummer as well.

Anyhow, now I'm back and have started to take bookings for one of my favourite classes which is this marvellour Weekender Bag. As you can see from this handful of examples from a previous class they can be made from virtually any fabric going- tea towels, tablecloths, curtains... and because It's backed it's extra sturdy.

This class is a quick whizz and there's a lot to get through in the workshop so it's very important that you can sew swiftly and steadily. Snowdrops are blooming in the hedgerows, daffs are nodding on urban roundabouts and Im back in the studio. Still sporting fingerless gloves and wearing my coat all day, but Im here, focussed and putting in a days work. My workshops are filling up very, very slowly and if you know anyone who wants to make a kimono, learn to sew or make some French Knickers please direct them to my site www.abijackson.com where you can now book classes using Paypal. Hurrah!

Last week I spoke to the Stitch and Bitch group about having a little competition to make a "creature " of some variety using old textiles and found objects. Whilst doing my other work I became involved with making my own character who Ive named Raydene Flanagan.

She started off as a sketch on the back of an envelope and gradually developed from there. I didn't have that much of a plan, although I did make a paper pattern and knew I wanted to use domestic linens. I love hand sewing and free machine embroidery, so she has some funny little tats- mermaids and such. Im also re-connecting with crochet after many years and crocheted her top using 3 yarns twisted together. her skirt is made from silk tie fragments embroidered together and she has fragments of beads, buttons and tiny objects stitched to the hem of her skirt. I sort of came unstuck when it came to shoes so have just left that for now because Im allowed to.

I just stitched away and let the work develop. A rarity for me because Im often working with patterns and deadlines. Its very feeing to work in such a way, you never know what will emerge.
She is strange though isn't she?TheStitchandMakeStudiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08313761559494842387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6526320918114266984.post-56712537308794947392014-03-02T07:50:00.002-08:002014-03-02T07:50:38.555-08:00Kimono Jacket Evening Class Starts in April.
Last year I went on a wandering foray down the High Street. Usually returning with a lipstick and Marks and Sparks biscuits. Aside from the biscuits, I saw some attractive Kimono jackets in River island and whilst i loved the prints i couldn't bring myself to buy one. Mainly because the fabrics are such poor quality and people would know where I brought it from so it would date and lose it's appeal quickly. I'd been toying with the idea of the kimono jacket for a long time and found a pattern in a book my dad had brought for me when I was 15! so that's many years ago now. I had to draft it up but I was a very, very simple shape. It didn't take long to make either.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Then I had a little play around with shortening the pattern and like this version even better. Both lots of fabric are from the Fabric Emporia which is at the end of my street and I'm in there at least twice a week. This shop alone deserves it own posting which Ill do soon. I digress, this jacket has a lot of mileage in it, embroidered panels, massive pockets, contrast fabrics, endless posibilities. My next version is going to be in hand painted silk. Oh, yes also It's going to be an evening class which starts in April and you can book through my website. Hurrah!TheStitchandMakeStudiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08313761559494842387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6526320918114266984.post-67758655979996209832014-02-23T04:58:00.001-08:002014-02-23T04:58:46.254-08:00Getting Back Into The Swing.
Ive been doing a lot of planning recently as well as writing new workshops. I've embraced 21st Century technology and added Paypal buttons to my website which enables people to book on classes straightaway. I'm pleased that it's actually working out well. The classes at My Little Vintage-where I teach only beginners and Intermediate tick along nicely. And Stitch and Bitch started agin this week after a long 2 months away. There was a definate frisson of excitement as folks caught up with each, happily everyone returned and we managed to squeeze in a couple of newbies as well.

My good friend Sally, who is a total and utter genius when it comes to dreaming up ideas, creating stuff and connecting people up, helped me design this awesome leaflet/letter to promote my classes and workshops. It has managed to capture the essence of Abigail Jackson in picture form. Im so fed up with seeing flyers for sewing classes, nail bars and hair dressers which all look the same and litter shop counters. I wanted something which looked so awesome people wanted to carry it around with them and show it around saying "Look at this...Im going to one of these classes". I (modestly) think we've managed to achieve that quite well.

Two of the classes Ive planned are making an A Line Skirt with mushrooms on it. And A childs dress with a hickory, dickory dock motif and a mouse in the pocket. I thought that rather than photograph the pieces I would do some illistrations. I don't get to draw as often as I'd like. So found this childs dress a real pleasure.

Finally, Im making stock for Landmark Arts which takes place in Teddingto across the first weekend in March. I've made a decision not to do Selvedge Spring fair this year and to try Landmark Arts instead. I had planned to make some kimono jackets last week but then decided to not buy any new fabrics and to use up trims I brought from raystitch and silks I'd had for years. I made some cushions, which Im happy with but feel I should've made something a bit more substantial. Which means Ill just have to make the kimono tops this week instead. I've been trying in earnest to get back into the studio because it is very cold in there. Today i worked in my coat and fingerless gloves all day. Which became quite difficult as I was painting cardboard tubes with thick glue and trying to wrap string around them. We finally got our sign up outside which looks stonking and I'll photograph that in the next week or so. The folk who work in the studio next door Dan and Lauren are super talented. Dan is an incredibly skilled painter and Lauren stitches creatures and her work is beautiful and wonderfully imagined. Their studio was looking particularly inviting so I snuck in and took some photo's. I hope you enjoy them.

I do enjoy looking at Images of other Artists workspaces. But these days they inevitably have Ikea shelving, tidied fabric piles and plenty of whimsy vintage stuff. And are trying (sometimes a bit too hard) to be whacky or contrived Arty. I don't want to see jam jars of meadow flowers and diolley bunting. Give me a felt mushroom with a menacing face any day of the week.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZUd9DocJRevMGt2zvQpR6SX_2RtoUd62e-oJxcX3Vk7lDpwkcty0ZPKvSUXQg2CTJTyt6ts5ZDQEvA-YNq1nV-mXwavEU9aNBzvjzYM43fnnQeyvRikP5dsPKhLidkbu9JpeRpJcmTeM/s1600/_DSC3426.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZUd9DocJRevMGt2zvQpR6SX_2RtoUd62e-oJxcX3Vk7lDpwkcty0ZPKvSUXQg2CTJTyt6ts5ZDQEvA-YNq1nV-mXwavEU9aNBzvjzYM43fnnQeyvRikP5dsPKhLidkbu9JpeRpJcmTeM/s400/_DSC3426.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Of all the subjects free motion embroidery is my favourite. I use the technique a lot on the clothing I make. And I just love the sheer pleasure to be gained from drawing with threads. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyKMnPHsnW613N4Z85aFiZiSuL3uE2y6fvElOeA1zLZlWYyh3B-2FHid-gFKzj1zqCbaR13vrg2xoUN6fyotZFOhXbpEiK8rJabtTV4fG2bj9RZLLQyMsssFrnnPe60HrGIIW08wypAr4/s1600/_DSC3402.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyKMnPHsnW613N4Z85aFiZiSuL3uE2y6fvElOeA1zLZlWYyh3B-2FHid-gFKzj1zqCbaR13vrg2xoUN6fyotZFOhXbpEiK8rJabtTV4fG2bj9RZLLQyMsssFrnnPe60HrGIIW08wypAr4/s400/_DSC3402.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
We also found time to use the technique and incorporate dissolvy. Trapping threads and small pieces of sheer fabrics to create a "mesh effect" once the dissolvy had been washed away. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbwjFNqxCZEZAwak2qhvr8qg_rMkEYg7bhCoUC8haMAqxtS5bu2de7gqHuntK3KvadVh-aT10aOcUbh9m6dyPxNSIyizf3x3iKlmxHo9cG5R-gACfSZd_a3Mb_qu0v3x_m-F2HPz6bqi4/s1600/_DSC3405.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbwjFNqxCZEZAwak2qhvr8qg_rMkEYg7bhCoUC8haMAqxtS5bu2de7gqHuntK3KvadVh-aT10aOcUbh9m6dyPxNSIyizf3x3iKlmxHo9cG5R-gACfSZd_a3Mb_qu0v3x_m-F2HPz6bqi4/s400/_DSC3405.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
We also applied a wash of colour in the form of Brusho inks which are really versatile, mix well and have good strong pigments.

Im a sorry old sporadic blogger and I don't take enough quality pictures of my fabric stash, coloured pencils in a jar, or dinners Ive made with red and green chillies. I just pitch a tale here and there to keep my hand in and impress any new people who may wander my way. I also have no clue how to insert a hyperlink or how to position my pictures so they form a cohesive pattern. They're all things i could learn though, aren't they....?
So for now Im going to tell you about the latest trip which I went on.

Back in the middle of September I got a job designing some outfits for a cruise ship show. The show is called The Midnight Hour and has no story as such but is a rollicking frolick through all those Motown and dance numbers they play at your cousins' 18th in the Monks Park Working Mens Club. It was fairly stressful at times but I had a great machinist who worked alongside me and we'd worked together before, we did a lot of work on getting the patterns and fit right for the female singers. The male singers were easier because I could buy their outfits off the peg.

We were fortunate because our lovely male lead had also been a stylist at Tony and Guy so he was a marvel with the girls hair-what a godsend.

Due to a timely twist of fate one of the two shows we were installing was A Midnight Hour, so I got to see the costumes I'd made on stage. At the risk of sounding like a proper Luvvy the people that i worked with work so hard, they're such a great bunch of folk and although it's a strange form of "another life" for me, I do love the comraderie and get thoroughly immersed in the job when I'm onboard.

We went to Rome and sailed around to Gibralta, Cartegghana (probably spelt that wrong) and Lisbon- which was delightful, I got off to buy some fishnets for the singers and the shops were still old fashioned, very quaint and rammed full of stock. There were plenty of haberdashery shops such as this one I photographed (at the top) with the gorgeous hand painted roses above the window. I espied a nun buying some lace in a haberdashery shop and tried to take a covert photo, but It came out wrong. Those places sell the most incredible range of items and I brought some lovely embroidered ribbon because I really don't have any at all back in my studio .......?TheStitchandMakeStudiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08313761559494842387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6526320918114266984.post-36015344229347406002013-11-02T10:28:00.001-07:002013-11-02T10:28:57.919-07:00 Sick of the shops.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've been fortunate to have regular work for the past few weeks designing and making the costumes for a new show onboard a cruise ship. Subsequently,this means I've had
extra money to treat myself to some new clothes. What a let down. I spent a couple of evenings online becoming befuddled and confused- i don't particularly enjoy being on the computer and find the experience of clothes shopping like standing under a waterfall with a paper cup hoping for a drink of water. It's a torrent.
Northampton Town Centre is like many clone towns the length and breadth of Britain. Same old shops selling the same old shite. So I brought some fabric and thought I'd make a skirt for myself. I've been reading Dolly Clackkets wonderful blog and was very inspired by her pictures of the dresses she makes and the gorgeous fabrics she uses.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid2ulGukKZxMPuXPi7NVG3JFNv24JB3cRFdcvC8JmchnzeYY-g95wde73u_YMyVm-UUabCyc3PDHIQdoSNlzSfnSD6LTg-CaThyphenhyphenPWB7hY6mcQ0PTb3buJhgWeQ0qlfB7DnBMW1GhkX_vI/s1600/new+skirt+168.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" closure_lm_362579="null" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid2ulGukKZxMPuXPi7NVG3JFNv24JB3cRFdcvC8JmchnzeYY-g95wde73u_YMyVm-UUabCyc3PDHIQdoSNlzSfnSD6LTg-CaThyphenhyphenPWB7hY6mcQ0PTb3buJhgWeQ0qlfB7DnBMW1GhkX_vI/s320/new+skirt+168.JPG" vsa="true" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Strange, considering my profession that I don't make anything for myself to wear. And in the past it's been because I'd rather sell it and have the money. Then I spend the money on clothes from charity shops or vintage stuff. In the past few years quality pieces in charity shops are more difficult to find, and the term "Vintage" has been flogged to within an inch of it's life. So I had in mind a skirt which I wanted to make. I ordered the fabric from fabric moon online and it was £13p/m which is a bit more than I'm used to spending but each piece of fabric will make 2 skirts because the underneath is a plainer colour.

<br />
The skirt I had in my mind's eye met in the front with ties so that it resembled an apron, had decent sized pockets, have no waistband and be A-line. The pattern started off as an A line Prima pattern and admittedly i could've made my own but It was much simpler to trace round theirs and adapt for my purposes. I sort of made it up as i went along and would do some things differently next time. As I was stitching away i got that frisson off excitement when i realised I could indulge my love of pom-poms and ric-rac, I just love putting the colours together. The pink fabric which I used for the pockets has tiny red stars on it and is from a collection given to me by a friend who's elderly mother was a dressmaker. It has that gorgeous crisp feel of 1950's cotton and can only be used sparingly as it is very special.

Im so pleased with the results. Im glad I sat at the machine and made it with great care and even put hanging loops inside it. This is going to be my wardrobe staple for winter and I can't wait to make another version. I'm often sadly disappointed by the lack of decent magazines I can buy in my local WH Smith. They don't stock Selvedge, Wonderland or anything else remotely interesting. I often wish Id been lobotomised so I could get at least some pleasure from TV Quickie or bumper wordsearch puzzle books. So I sometimes settle for expensive women's magazines, but my heart's not really in it. I don't really want to be party to how Linda Evangelista applies her mascara and I don't care about boswellox and pentipeptides. However I do love, love, love Wallpaper magazine because of the mix-up of fashion and styling. It's aspirational, interesting and indulgent.</td></tr>

A lot's happened in Kings Cross since I last visited. With the investment in the area, the renaissance of St Pancras station and the re-location of Central St martins it's a far cry from the lunchtime strippers pubs and tramps shitting in doorways of Northdown Street.
New money and regeneration brings new shops and creates a new scene. This pop-up shop on the Caledonia Rd is a great example. Money is being raised to build a school in Kabul. The fixtures, fittings and all of the stock have been kindly donated. The stock is really very good quality with embroidered pieces from Afghanistan as well as good quality vintage clothing. As with all pop-ups it won't be there long.

This is a great building with high ceilings and lots of natural light. They put on lots of workshops and themed nights as well as offering High Tea in the afternoons. I was particularly taken by the class "Lionel Rich Tea" where you were given a rich tea biscuit and had to draw Lionel's' face on it.

Goldhawk Road in Shepherds Bush is Mecca for fabric buyers everywhere. I was looking for a very specific shade for a bride. There are many shops and all have a vast (and that really is an understatement) range of fabrics to choose from. If you're a Liberty lover, who isn't? You'll find cotton lawns at £15 for 3 metres. Best to go with a list and a strong willed friend to keep you focused.

Not far away on Shepherd Bush Road is the Traid shop. This is always worth a visit. The shop had had a re-furnishment and looks fantastic. Honestly, the clothes are slightly more costly than some charity shops but Traid are much more selective with their stock. The areas are laid out well and the staff are knowledgeable and lovely.

If you're thinking of visiting London soon and want to discover a new area you'll have a great time in Shepherds Bush. Forget the crush on oxford St. Shepherds Bush is full of real people. Shepherds Bush market is great for sewing trims, tights and tasty, tasty falafels. I'm getting very excited about the impending shop opening. I'm very reluctantly been using up all the fabric I've been collecting, or hoarding throughout the years. I get worried that if I use it up there won't be any left in the world. I remember a time when charity shops had 1950's and '60's clothing in them and now that's all gone.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOs-vZedXHbQ1Aw50foRvo3GpWfuSH0EWyK7udmEZru_g2TYxFu-tk0iQdLTM6ktomh2cISchI2l-3BXunaEv1t_sOgSDlrOSpOh0mkew7v0k8R9YOkRUm_oCS3weQ6EqDDqYjOcmSuII/s1600/fabric+finds+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOs-vZedXHbQ1Aw50foRvo3GpWfuSH0EWyK7udmEZru_g2TYxFu-tk0iQdLTM6ktomh2cISchI2l-3BXunaEv1t_sOgSDlrOSpOh0mkew7v0k8R9YOkRUm_oCS3weQ6EqDDqYjOcmSuII/s320/fabric+finds+005.JPG" /></a>
So after talking myself down from the edge re the fabric situation, I've continued to make clothing. This barkcloth is just so wonderful. The print is Chinese huts and bamboo. I don't think this fabric has ever been used so is in peak condition.

This Hawaiian Barkcloth was part of the long hem from a dress which I used for the bodice. The skirt piece was fabric I'd had for years but it's just so narrow so I had to piece the skirt panels together like a jigsaw. I took it home and washing the finish out of it. It's so lovely and soft now.

So now I have the bug I'm justified in going to buying massive amounts of vintage fabrics in the name of making new stock. And here are my latest purchases. Which are going to be made into skirts, pinafore dresses and jackets. So I better thread the old machine up then!TheStitchandMakeStudiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08313761559494842387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6526320918114266984.post-38161560255194878312013-07-31T09:42:00.001-07:002013-07-31T09:53:57.265-07:00Now You Can All Dress Like A Bag lady on Acid.

For some time now, probably about two years, I've had thoughts about selling my clothes online. I've dabbled with an Etsy shop but didn't feel it was the right format for me. I thought that if I was going to buy clothes online I would need to touch the fabric, feel it's weight and see the pattern close-up. But that is just the way I feel, I've NEVER brought any clothing online other than cheapie stuff from e-bay and that was years ago.
What began to change my mind is working at private sales and shows such as Selvedge and Renegade where everyone takes a business card and asks "Do you sell online?" and even if they don't actually purchase anything on the day you'll have another opportunity to sell to them later if they go to your online shop. Why didn't I think of this earlier?
I absolutely love supermarket sarah and have watched it grow in popularity. The concept is so simple and the walls give a very quick overview to the designer's work so you can tell straight away whether or not your going to like something. Eventually I have decided to begin to sell my work online and my good friend Miss Blaise-who is a techie wizardess has been building me a shop using the shopify template. I had no idea how much work would be involved, my brain is really slumbering now, coupled with the fact that I've also learnt how to do Instagram and you can find me at stitchandmakestudio. It's all good stuff for business. Here are a few of the frocks I'll be posting up in the shop, eventually. Hope you like them.TheStitchandMakeStudiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08313761559494842387noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6526320918114266984.post-83962515891631996842013-05-29T01:05:00.000-07:002013-05-29T01:05:06.462-07:00School Visit and Still Life Textiles Workshop.
Last Friday I did a workshop with a group of students from Catmose College. I met their tutor at the Knit and Stitch show at Ally Pally some years ago now-she asked me if I'd like to come and do a work shop at the school. Past visitors had been Julia Arkell and Alison Willoughby, so of course I said Yes! Consequently, I now work with the school regularly as a visiting art practitioner. Sometimes I visit with a textiles project which the class work on in a group in a double lesson . Or I take a project which they complete in the following lessons too. In the past we've made wallets from comics, Alice in Wonderland soft pendants and more recently Rock Star cushions.

On this occasion the studio visit was to enable the group to work with me using a range of textile techniques which could be applied to their still life pieces which had already been started.

This group were exemplary and so wonderful to work with. They were fuelled up with kit kats and Tunnocks marshmallows, we had Madagascar on the DVD player and settled down for a good days work.

Considering that the group had never attempted free motion embroidery before, they all did really well. No-one broke a needle and they all got the hang of it straightaway. I demo'd molar work, trapunto, applying surfaces and some hand stitching.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day and one of the reasons was that I had started to prep throughout the week, so I was familiar with the work and nice and calm. I had lots of samples to demonstrate and books to reference if needed. The students worked with such concentration and a positive attitude toward their work. This way of working has a natural cut off point where the brain just gets fatigued. So it was good to pack up knowing that everyone had worked so well and produced such a great result. Well Done.TheStitchandMakeStudiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08313761559494842387noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6526320918114266984.post-82053149138740692672013-05-12T08:35:00.001-07:002013-05-12T08:35:46.686-07:00Activities in my absence.Well, after a pronounced absence Im back. Readers of this blog will know that Ive already done a Transatlantic crossing in Jan. And I wasn't particularly looking forward to seven days at sea. Despite the fact that you're one a luxury cruise liner, It's still work every day. Here we all are in wardrobe, and It's in this windowless room that fittings for the 4 singers and 12 dancers take place. We also mend and repair the costumes, sew up the tears in sweaty shirts and torn seams in trousers.
I think on this particular morning we were waiting for our passes so we could get off the ship in New York.

The ship had berthed in Brooklyn and I particularly wanted to visit the small boutiques and independent shops that I'd heard so much about, but on the other hand I also wanted to walk along the skyline, but I also wanted to mooch around Spring St and by Canal St. We really didn't have much time at all so I ended up dithering about in Dean and Dulicia which is an incredible Deli just staring at the biscuits and custard powder! like a total numpty. I did buy a nice lipstick and some bits and bobbins and was almost the last person back on the boat. It was just so bloody lovely to stand on solid ground.<br />

At the front of the ship stand these beautiful sculptural forms, which glint in the sunshine in their polished perfection. They are in fact spare propellor blades and I have tried to particularly arty by placing the Statue of Liberty between them but she's just a bit too small.

Ive also started some beginners classes at My Little Vintage in Earls Barton. Beginners classes are the most popular class that I run and Its just so satisfying to know that they walk in the door not being able to sew and leave full of enthusiasm and can't wait to get home and buy a sewing machine. The rooms so bright and sunny and is perfect for a small group.

The beginners class is pretty intense and we romp through things at quite a speed with lots of sampling and note taking. We're also planning an intermediate class on June 1st for those who can sew but get baffled by patterns and want to know how to insert a zip properly.<br />

We start right at the beginning with the basics but also cover gathers, turning corners, hemming, binding, bows. All of which can be made into a small apron - if you're that way inclined.

Finally, finally, finally I went to work and managed to think about other things rather than escaping and getting back home again.
My classes for beginners have started at My Little Vintage in Earls Barton- which is a great village, with lots of stuff happening, good shops and a great community feel about the place. We planned to run just one session for beginners but have had to add another date and i feel another date will soon need to be added. Everyone wants to learn to sew! Im no longer a stitching freak in the wilderness.

I had a pile of skirts and alterations on the table at home for about 6 weeks and took them into work today. And after a mammoth washing up session, floor sweep and tidy up and then of course it was time for lunch I beagn to knuckle down. I usually work on my Industrial machine, which I love to pieces because it goes so damned fast and I can sit and make a dress in under an hour. Today, however I used this janome machine so I could sit closer to the fire when working! Its also a nifty little beast because It cost a mere £120 and comes with a free motion facility. I can honestly say that this is the best beginners machine for the price and also offers the free motion embroidery option as well. If you're thinking of trading up or starting sewing-GET THIS MOFO! You won't regret it. You can buy one from Sew... on the Wellingborough Road. See Andy or Gill, theyre both really knowledgable about machines and very helpful.

So anyway, I ended up making a series of motifs for my skirt which I appliqued and free motion embroidered and finally beaded (you know when you just can't stop) If anyone's going to hear me talk at pattishall WI you'll be lucky enough to see me wearing it.

At the beginning of January, whilst Britain was held in the grip of snow and ice. I went off to work and woke up on the other side of the world, in a tiny windowless room, behind a Bernina sewing machine.

Here are some photos from that time. I went to work on board The Queen Elizabeth helping to install the shows. I had a wonderful time but it was surreal in many ways. We got of in St Johns in Antigua and I took this photo of someones pants drying out on a rock. Very nice. I must start swilling out my bra and hanging it on the holly tree outside our house.

This year I have found the whole christmas experience very discombobulating. Last week I was in 4 different cities working on the cruise ship, came home, hit the ground running and did the whole Xmas thing. Im so used to working that Im finding this enforced holiday-ness wierd.

Mustn't grumble though.... I have enjoyed being with my wonderful children. Who, although being adults still manage to bicker and fight for kicks. They revert right back to the roles they had when they were little.

Last week I had my first taste of life aboard a cruise ship. I went to work in "wardrobe" on The Queen Victoria which is one of the Cunard liners. She sailed out from Southampton and crossed the North Sea to Goteburg, Copenhagen and Hamburg. Previously I have only ever sailed yachts and in October this year sailed close by one of these monstrous gin palaces in Corfu old town. I told myself to reserve any judgements and to look at it all as an interesting new experience.

I did try and photograph this to give an idea of scale, but have managed to lose all perspective. It's about the size of Northampton Bus Station, but fortunately doesnt cater for the same type of Customer. I was part of a team which instal the shows and work with the singers and dancers. Most of the work is altering outfits, mending,repairing and maintaining the costumes. I took this photo in Goteburg when I left the ship to buy some black trousers for one of the singers.

We went to Copenhagen, which is an absolutely beautiful city and reminded me a lot of Amsterdam. This cruise was primarily for the Xmas markets. Although we worked the contracted hours and sometimes stayed in the cabin unpicking into all ungodly hours, we still had time for a swifty whistlestop visit for photos and cake.

On the first evening we went for a stroll around Goteburg, visited a Supermarket for mayonnaise (because you cant buy it in this country!) and Glogg a spiced mulled wine. We visited a bar and paid sixteen pounds for half a beer and a bottle of beer. I know that a lot of my friends had complained about the price of alcohol in Sweden but I was truly stupified. Truly.
These were the Xmas windows of a wonderful store in Copenhagen.

And just a little cramped behind stage. The singers put their make up on here when I wasn't sewing. I sewed inwards facing the mirror and there are no windows. Not the best place to be when crossing the North Sea and it's rougher than a bear's arse. Which probably explains why I decorated the carpet on the second day. (I took my tablets after that)It hasn't put me off though and Ill be back out there in Jan.

We had our Stitch and Bitch party a bit earlier this year as Im working away on a cruise next week, in the wardrobe department. There are many folks out there who would claim that Ive never been a great success in the wardrobe dept. But that's just because I wear all my favourite clothes at once.

Following on from last years Crap Quiz, the crazed fools begged for more. So this year they had to draw the human body, draw and label the organs and stick them on the body. Genius! Most peoples organs resembled old deflated party balloons. The nurse amongst us got very competitive and had to be sedated with Haribo.

Sadly the winning team didn't get their prize as someone had put it on the buffet table and it had been eaten!
We had the usual Secrat Santa but this year the presents were in the Bootsale drinks globe ala Peckham's finest Del Boy and Rodney.

And of course pass the parcel was played. i like to crank the party mood up a notch or two by adding some extra prizes between the layers of newspaper. Like bags of macaroni, socks, a bar of soap and my own favourite a tube a gravy paste. I made sure it was vegetarian.

Next year we have knitting supremo and Yarn Yogi, Emma joining us. So many folk have asked me to teach them how to knit and crochet and I just dont have the extra time as well as help the class sew. Emma helped us tonnes on the Lionheart/geurilla knitting project earlier this year so is the ideal candidate to skill up the ladies.

Stitch and Bitch will be 5 years old this May. Not bad for a project which was only supposed to be running for 12 weeks. I still look forward to Thursday evenings, helping everyone out, catching up on projects and of course welcoming new stitchers into the fold. We're back on Valentine's day 2013. Although the cost of Selvedge Magazine makes it a real considered purchase. I do enjoy the in-depth articles on a huge variety of textile related subject. Also, the paper smells wonderful! and there's nothing I love more than cracking the spine and flooding my olfactory senses! Although sometimes I do find it quite London-centric, which can be irritating.
I was fortunate enough to get a pitch at their November Fair, in the new location at Chelsea Town Hall. And despite a baggy-eyed early start and a long drive in the rain, I did have a wonderful day.

Selvedge had organised a posse of adolescent porters to help with loading and unloading and if anyone has experienced setting up at a fair you will know what an absolute godsend this is, especially having to cross the busy Kings Road laden with boxes and rails. Not only that, but volunteers came around with tea in the morning- a genuis touch, and the same volunteers were on hand to man the stalls for a loo or lunch break.

On arrival some blaggard had nicked my place! but luckily I managed to set up beside the lovely Janine Pope and her friend Pamela. They're both regulars at my Stitch and Bitch classes. Janine uses her Danish heritage to influence her work, she incorporates beautiful tweed, wool and leather to make "perpetual notebooks" as she calls them. Journals where pages can be added, these pages are often printed with delightful images on a range of textured papers. She was best newcomer at Contemporary Applied Crafts and her work is delightful.

Chelsea Town Hall was the perfect location to host a Selvedge Fair. The range and variety of talent on show was very inspiring. When I began making this my "proper job" years ago now I held the work of the Folk artist Julie Arkell in reverence as she typified everything I loved about craft and making. Last Saturday we were selling under the same roof and I felt my career had reached it's zenith. Im looking forward to March next year so I can do it all again.

Ive returned from a very exhausting weekend at Spitafields where I took the Stitch and Make Studio on the road and appeared at The Renegade Craft Fair. This show is always so well attended and It's one of the few which Ill go and sell at. Long gone are the days when Id lovingly prepare and finish my stock only to pitch up next to someone selling "Blobs in a Basket"- boggly eyes hot glue gunned onto pom-poms. Ive learnt my lesson the hard way.

I met loads of super wonderful co-sellers and I really enjoy chewing the fat with them. Its so refreshing to talk to others who understand the impact of a shrinking buying market, where to find contacts and how to manage copy-ists.

Living in Nupton's rural idyll its quite a shock to walk down the streets filled with interesting folks and the smells of exotic food. The walk from the hotel on the Sunday morning was strangely eerie and very relaxing.

Thankfully, I had taken my new and most wonderful Church's brogues. I did notice that many of the Brick Lane Hipsters were wearing a similar but much cheaper version. And it gave me a feeling of pride and satisfaction to know that I lived in the home of the best made shoes in the world. Thats true heritage and craft skills for you London.

Soooo, now I have a new lot of classes running starting with Beginners Sewing which starts on Sept 8th. All of the classes are running on Saturdays only from 10-3.30. Running classes on a Tues evening as well as a Thurs was getting too tiring. There is a straight cost of £35 for the class. Youll have to check the website for all of the finer details but I know Ive tried to arrange a good variety so we have, free motion embroidery, hand embroidery, knicker making and lino printing- to name just a few.
I really hope that there's something to tickle everyone's fancy and hoping to see you in a class soon. xTheStitchandMakeStudiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08313761559494842387noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6526320918114266984.post-24128983003762549892012-07-08T15:21:00.003-07:002012-07-08T15:21:54.425-07:00Noho needs KnittersWell we are galloping toward the finishing line with our knitting project. The folks of Noho have been incredibly supportive knitting all manner of eyeballs, bananas, jungle vines and pigeons. Saturday saw the last get together and a chance to stitch, knit and stuff.

We begin installing on Tuesday and all day on Wednesday. The weather has been truly atrocious, which wont be too bad a thing if you're trying to cover public art in balaclavas and legwarmers.

These banners are going about planted flower tubs on pedestrian islands. After wrestling for hours with machine knitting, and getting nowhere we decided to buy wool felt and felt the letters on instead. Im super chuffed with the results as machine knitting is such a ball ache. The reason for the strange choice of words is that this project compliments Shauna Richardson's Project Lionheart -in which 3 enormous lions are visiting Nupton market square for the week. Hence the Roar, Purr and Growl.TheStitchandMakeStudiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08313761559494842387noreply@blogger.com3
